The existing records were to be destroyed, and anyone who passed on the knowledge of the ancient practices risked imprisonment or worse. During this time, Coptic monks risked their lives to bury a single copy of the forbidden writings in the desert for future generations.
These writings remained hidden beneath the Egyptian sand until they were discovered and translated in the mid-20th century. In 1986, during a trip to Cairo, Gregg Braden was granted permission to view the texts.
